Four Warriors Named To All-WAC Football Team

2009 All-WAC Team

DENVER - University of Hawai'i Warrior center John Estes, slot receiver Greg Salas, and linebacker Blaze Soares were named to the all-Western Athletic Conference first team, announced by the conference Monday. Offensive tackle Aaron Kia was selected to the second team.

Estes, who set the NCAA record for most career starts with 54, is a three-time first team recipient. The Stockton, Calif., native has started all 54 games of his career since 2005 and has not missed a snap with the first unit. He was recently named one of six finalists for the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the nation's top center, and team Most Valuable Player.

Estes becomes the fifth Warrior in school history to earn all-WAC first team honors three times joining Davone Bess (2005-07), Jason Elam (1989, '91-92), Al Noga (1985-87), and Gary Allen (1979-81).

Salas, a junior from Chino, Calif., led the WAC in both receptions (106) and receiving yards (1,590), both of which were the second highest single-season totals in school history. He also hauled in eight touchdowns and was a semifinalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top receiver.

Soares, a senior from Kane'ohe, O'ahu, led the team with 107 tackles, which ranked fourth in the WAC. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and one interception. At the season-ending team banquet, Soares was given the Ben Yee Most Inspirational Award.

Kia, a senior from Mililani, O'ahu, started all 13 games at left tackle this season and made 24 career starts during his four-year career.

Boise State's Kellen Moore was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Nevada's Dontay Moch earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Nevada's  Brandon Wimberly was named the Freshman of the Year.  Boise State's Chris Petersen was voted the WAC's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

The Warriors concluded the 2009 season with a 6-7 record, following a season-ending loss to Wisconsin. UH posted its first losing season since 2005 and had its three-year streak of bowl appearances snapped.
