Rosenberg Captures Honolulu Masters Open

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i men's tennis player Leo Rosenberg captured the Honolulu Masters Open with a 6-4, 6-3 straight set win over Daniel Luedi Sunday morning at the Oahu Club. With the win, Rosenberg earned an automatic wildcard into the Honolulu Pro Challenger, a USTA event to be held in January.

The Honolulu Masters Open is a sectional championship only open to state residents and students residing in Hawai`i.  Rosenberg, seeded fourth in the tournament, beat Luedi, a native of Switzerland and Hawaii Pacific University's top player, and Sebastian Bader, another HPU standout, on successive days to win the championship.

A number of other Rainbow Warriors competed in the event, Sophomore Chad Rubin and freshman Chris Meyer fell in the round of 32, junior Daniel Llarenas made it to the round of 16, while junior Jeremy Tweedt and UH volunteer coach Ikaika Jobe advanced to the quarterfinals.

Last year Rosenberg won another wildcard event on the Big Island, which gained him entry into the Waikoloa Futures. The Honolulu Pro Challenger field typically features ATP players ranked from the top 100-300 in the world. Pre-qualifying will begin in early January with the main draw set to begin on Jan. 25.
