Rainbow Wahine Sailors Heading To The Nationals

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine sailing team finished in second place at the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Women's Championship Saturday at Keehi Lagoon. Stanford, ranked fourth in the nation, captured the regatta and joined UH as an automatic qualifier for next month's Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's National Championship.

Hosting the district championship in their home waters, the Rainbow Wahine clinched its ninth nationals berth in the last 11 years. UH returns to the nationals after a one-year absence and will travel to Newport, R.I., for the 18-school regatta, May 25-27.

Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine were Becky Mabardy (skipper), Darla Baldwin (crew) and Erin Magee (crew) in the A division and Hannah Tuson-Turner (skipper) and Jackie McLoughlin in the B division. Stanford and UH captured the two available bids for nationals over California, UCLA, UC Irvine and UC San Diego.

The coed sailing team already sewed up a bid to ICSA dinghy national semifinals last week and will travel to Long Beach, Calif., April 26-27.
