Men’s Swimming Impressive, Women’s Diving Wins Three Events

IRVINE, Calif. – The men's swimming team had a strong showing at the 2008 Anteater Shootout hosted by UC Irvine and the women's diving team won three events. The two-day event featured eight men's teams and 11 women's teams.
 
After both the men's and women's teams advanced to pool one with good showing on Friday, the two teams performed well on Saturday.
 
The men's team won all three dual meets on Saturday, combining to win all six dual meets over the event. The men beat Air Force, BYU and UNLV on Saturday. The women's team also swam well, beating UC Irvine, Cal Poly, Idaho and Pepperdine on the first day and beating Pepperdine on the second day.
 
On the opening day of the shootout, the men's and women's teams both qualified for the main pool on Saturday. The men won all three of their dual meets against Air Force, Cal Poly and UC Irvine. The women advanced to the main pool by beating three teams.
 
During competition on opening day, Mark Higley won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.06, while teammate Vlad Anastasescu finished second. The men's 200 medley team also won to go along with Nicola Xella, who won the 100 breastroke in a time of 57.32.
 
The men were competing against UC Irvine, Air Force and Cal Poly during the opening pool. In the 200 butterfly, Paul Birich won the event in a time of 1:51.74 and teammate Greg Wilson finished third. Davis Kane won the 50 free in 20.60, with Ilia Reyes finishing second. In the 100 freestyle, UH swept the event, taking home the first five spots. Kane finished first in 45.14, followed by Sean Reilly and Reyes.
 
Lazar Bogdanovski won the 200 backstroke in 1:48.49, Xella won the 200 breastroke and Greg Wilson won the 100 butterfly.
 
In diving, Douglas Cohen won the 3-meter with a score of 295.
 
On the women's side, the Rainbow Wahine were competing against Stanford, Cal Poly, UC Irvine, Idaho and Pepperdine.
 
In diving, Raquel Bartlow swept the diving events on the first day, winning the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
 
In the 100 breastroke, Brianna De Palezieux finished in second with a time of 1:05.78, Elliko Heimbach finished in second in the 200 butterfly and the team finished in third in the 200 freestyle relay.
