REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's sailing team begins its 2007-08 campaign at the Bryson Women's Intersectional, Sept. 29-30, in Redwood City, Calif. UH will be racing against six other schools in the regatta, including host and defending district champion Stanford.
Hawai`i comes into the season unranked, having received votes in the Sailing World Top 15 preseason collegiate poll. The Rainbow Wahine, a perennial West Coast power in the last decade, did not qualify for the nationals last year--just the second time in the last 10 years that has happened. UH looks to get back on track this year as five newcomers join seven returnees to form this year's squad.
Head coach Andy Johnson enters his 19th season at the helm and is the second longest-tenured coach at UH, behind Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji. Johnson has coached seven Rainbow Wahine sailors to All-American status and led the program to its first-ever national title in 2001.
