Kennan In Top 10 At World University Games

KAZAN, Russia – Former University of Hawai'i track and field athlete TeRina Keenan placed sixth in the discus event and 10th in the shot put event at the 2013 Summer Universiade, also known as the World University Games.
 
Keenan, who was a member of the Rainbow Wahine from 2009-12, competed for her native New Zealand. She was one of 16 competitors in the discus event and made it through to the finals, where she threw 171-10 (52.38m) on her sixth and final attempt.
 
Russia's Vera Ganeeva won the competition with a throw of 201-0 (61.26m) followed by fellow Russian Elena Panova, who threw 186-6 (56.86m). South Africa's Maryke Oberholzer took bronze at 177-5 (54.09m).
 
In the shot put, Keenan placed 10th among 12 finalists with a personal best throw of 52-10.25 (16.11m). Russia's Irina Tarasova captured gold at 61-6.25 (18.75m).
 
Keenan finished her UH career as one of school's top throwers all-time. She captured five career medals at the Western Athletic Conference Championships (three gold and two silver) and competed in four NCAA Regional events joining Novelle Murray, Meghan Weaver and Emily Sheppard as the school's only four-time regional qualifiers.
 
The Auckland, New Zealand native qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2012 and placed ninth.
