UH Weathers Rain and Rebels

Swim Meet Results

HONOLULU – Swimmers struggled against wind and rain tonight at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UH Rainbows triumphed over UNLV in the very last race to end with scores 151.5-147.5. The women’s team fell to San Diego State (152-138) and UNLV (182-112) in a double-dual meet. Diver Maggie Roberts made it through the storm, earning herself a ticket to the NCAA Zone Championships.

Five points short in the final relay, the Rainbows needed to win first to tie UNLV. As Konstantin Dubrovin headed back to the block in the final stretch and in the lead, Hawai‘i knew they had it won. Dave Skudin, anchor in UH’s second relay team, wasn’t far behind for the third place finish.

Sophomore Erik Lesnewsky clocked in first in the 1000 free with 9:29.56. Konstantin Dubrovin took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.73. Dubrovin went on to win the 100 free with 45.97 seconds, a new season top time. Cheyne Bloch won the 100 breast with a time of 56.96 seconds. Bloch earned an NCAA qualifying time of 54.38 seconds in this event earlier in the season. Tudor Ignat swam into the lead early to win the 200 berast with 2:03.83, his new second top team time of the season. Ignat also placed second behind his teammate, Bloch, in the 100 breast with 57.61 seconds. Kurt Boehm placed second in the 200 breast with 2:08.07, his season’s best. Boehm beat his second team top time by .56 seconds with his second place finish in the 200 fly with 1:51.22. Pat Foley won the 200 IM with 1:53.57, setting the second fastest time of the season. Boehm clocked in behind him for second with a time of 1:54.68, now the third top team time.

The meet began in the afternoon with outstanding UH dives. Newcomer from Australia, Maggie Roberts won the women’s one- and three-meter dives and will attend the NCAA Zone Championships with teammate Sarah Farr. Roberts earned scores of 279.75 (one-meter) and 289.95 (three-meter). Teammate Jenalin Miller earned third place scores 236.25 (one-meter) and 252.00 (three-meter).

“Maggie was very steady and did a great job,” said Mike Brown, UH head diving coach. “She’s making progress week by week and will definitely improve through February and March.” Roberts continues to recover from knee surgery.

Sophomore Mike Gowdy placed first in both dives with scores of 337.87 and 336.60 in the one and three-meter dives, respectively. Jon Coyle earned second place scores in the one-meter with 326.77 and the three-meter with 323.85. Gowdy and Coyle, both sophomore standouts, qualified for the NCAA Zone Championship earlier this season. Senior Eddie Stevens placed third in the one-meter dive with 289.87.

UH’s women’s teams were victorious in many events as well. Freshman Katia Sarakatsani won the 200 free with 1:54.66.
