Charles Hemenway is remembered for providing off-campus housing for football players. The namesake of Hemenway Hall on the University’s upper campus, he solicited funds from the community to help athletes pay for their tuition and books. Upon his death in 1947, he left assets amounting to more than $1.2 million to be used for UH scholarships.
