HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i women's polo player
Amarens Genee has been voted to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 at-large team. Genee, the first Rainbow Wahine in her sport to earn the honor, now advances to the national ballot for Academic All-American consideration.
The senior center from Gorinchem, Netherlands, has been an instrumental player in each of her four years at UH, but none more than this year when she was a first-team all-Big West pick. The team's second-leading scorer (64 goals), she helped the Rainbow Wahine capture both the Big West Conference regular-season and tournament titles in their debut season in the league. The team advanced to its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance where the two-time all-conference selection led UH to a fourth-place national finish. With 185 career goals, she leaves UH as the school's third all-time leading scorer.
Genee is a kinesiology major who will be graduating later this year. She is a two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Scholar Athlete and American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic honoree. Just last week at the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship banquet, Genee was presented the Elite 89 Award, given to the player in the tournament who holds the highest GPA.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a player must have completed at least one academic year, must be a starter or significant reserve, must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. Voting is done by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
The at-large winners include students-athletes from a dozen NCAA women's sports ranging from golf to ice hockey to swimming, while District 8 encompasses schools from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.
