Women’s Soccer Keeps Unbeaten Streak Alive

Box Score

WAIPAHU – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team captured the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory Sunday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Christy Watanabe scored the game-winner in the first overtime period to keep UH's undefeated in its last seven matches.

Watanabe, a senior midfielder, picked the perfect time to score her first career goal, maneuvering through the Titan defense before launching an 18-yard low just inside the post, ending the match less than two minutes into overtime.

With the win UH has now gone unbeaten in seven straight matches (5-0-2), tying a school-record set three other times, most recently in 2004. The Rainbow Wahine are also undefeated in their last 11 home matches (8-0-3) and last seven overtime matches (4-0-3). The Rainbow Wahine also equaled their win total from last year, just eight matches into the season.

Detroit (2-4-1) scored the first goal off a corner kick in the 51st minute. Kanani Taaca saved an Alyssa Riley shot, but Haley Burtraw volleyed in a rebound shot that bounced off the cross bar and just over the goal line.

UH got the equalizer in the 80th minute when Tiana Fujimoto scored one from close range off a cross from Karli Look. It was the sophomore's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine found themselves in their fourth overtime match in its last five contests, but it didn't last long as Watanabe scored the golden goal just 1:36 into extra time.

Taaca, who registered a season-high seven saves in Friday's tie versus Ball State, recorded four key saves in the win over Detroit and was tabbed tournament MVP. UH ended the game with an 18-9 shot advantage.

After playing six straight home matches, UH heads back on the road for the first time in a month to play at Washington State (Sept. 14) and Eastern Washington (Sept. 16).
