Men’s Basketball Squares Off With BYU-Hawai‘i In Exhibition Contest

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team will play its second exhibition game of the preseason when it hosts BYU-Hawaii on Thursday, Nov. 5. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors are coming off 76-65 exhibition win over UH Hilo last Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Senior Bill Amis led the way for UH with a monster effort, posting 27 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Hawai`i was without a full squad as four key players—senior forward Brandon Adams and newcomers Douglas Kurtz, Jeremy Lay, Dwain Williams—were all sidelined against the Vulcans. Junior point guard Hiram Thompson, picked up the slack finishing with 19 points and four assists, while draining 11-of-12 free throws. All-conference forward Roderick Flemings saw limited minutes, scoring 14 points.

The 'Bows will face a formidable exhibition opponent in the Seasiders, who went 27-2 last year and finished ranked third nationally. BYUH enters 2009-10 as the Division II preseason favorite and returns a loaded squad that includes NCAA II National Player of the Year Lucas Alves, Cousy Award finalist Virgil J.R. Buensuceso and 2009 Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Year Tsung-Hsien “Jet” Chang.

Following the contest on Thursday, Hawai'i will have a a week to prepare for the start of the regular season. The 'Bows will play 21 regular-season home games, beginning with the season opener versus Southern Utah on Friday, Nov. 13 in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.
