Men’s Basketball Tips Off Season With Exhibition Opener

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Warrior men's basketball team will make its season debut with an exhibition game versus UH-Hilo on Friday, Oct. 30. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The men's basketball squad, led by third-year head coach Bob Nash, returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from last years squad that finished 13-17 overall and 5-11 in the Western Athletic Conference. Among the returnees is senior wing Roderick Flemings, who earned all-WAC second team, all-WAC newcomer and NABC District 6 second team honors last year while leading the team at 16.6 ppg. Also returning is two-year starter Bill Amis who last year led the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg), field goal percentage (.468) and blocks (41).
 
Meanwhile, six new players join the Rainbow Warriors in 2009-10: walk-on Rykin Enos; 7-foot center Douglas Kurtz, a Brazilian native out of Marshalltown (Ia.) College; point guard Jeremy Lay out of Northern Oklahoma College-Enid; Division I transfers Zane Johnson (Arizona) and Aleksandar Milovic (Duquesne) both of whom will sit out this season per NCAA rules; and Dwain Williams, a former starter at Providence College.
 
UH will again field a diverse squad with players from six different states (Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington) and five foreign countries (Brazil, Canada, China, Lithuania and Montenegro).
 
The men's basketball team will play 21 regular-season home games this season. The Rainbow Warriors will play a second exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 5 versus BYU-Hawai'i before opening the regular season versus Southern Utah on Nov. 13 in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.
